Working on the Road

Dear Joe and Vicki: Is there some way we can supplement our income by working while we travel?
Joe: The last time we checked there were more jobs chasing RVers than there were RVers willing to work them. Compensation often includes a free campsite with hookups and a salary commensurate with the type and amount of work you will be doing. Most of these jobs are temporary or seasonal in nature, so you will have plenty of opportunity to enjoy your RV travels between jobs.
A good number of RV parks and campgrounds employ RVers during their busy seasons. Office work, security and maintenance are just a few examples of the types of positions available. Some campgrounds simply provide a free campsite in exchange for a given amount of work. Others offer both a salary and campsite. The job opportunities in most RV parks and campgrounds are usually for couples but singles are hired as well.
The best part is that these jobs are available during the most pleasant time of the year. RVers can find work in the north during the summer and in the south during the winter.
The National Parks concessionaires who operate the hotels, gift shops, restaurants, gas stations and grocery stores, hire thousands of RVers every year.
Jobs with concessionaires include accountants, computer operators, clerks, managers, supervisors, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, drivers, tour guides, security, medical, hotel and restaurant workers. The list goes on.
Jobs for RVers are not limited to the great outdoors. Casinos all over the country hire RVers as dealers, change makers, accountants, cooks, waitresses, musicians and entertainers. Theme parks like Disney World, Adventureland, and Six Flags add personnel during their busy seasons.
And, there are other seasonal job opportunities. RVers find work in pumpkin patches in the fall, Christmas tree lots and department stores in the winter, and tax preparer’s offices after the holidays.
I think you’ll find that being an RVer is actually an advantage when looking for work at seasonal locations.
Vicki: Another approach to finding work is the temporary employment market. Today’s temporary employment agencies fill more than just clerical and office positions. Today’s temp workers are men and women of all ages who work in every conceivable field. You will find temporary employment agencies filling positions for engineers, nurses, draftsmen, accountants, bank employees, assembly-line workers, executives, pharmacists and a host of trades and professions.
You have a lot of flexibility when you work on a seasonal or temporary basis. You commit for a brief period of time, make some money, and then move on down the road.
Don't overlook the general employment market. Search the want-ads, contact local chambers of commerce, and check out the bulletin boards at colleges and local libraries.
RVers will find a lot of job opportunities in Workamper News. The magazine is devoted to finding legitimate jobs for RVers. It is loaded with classified ads placed by employers who are looking for RVers to fill their job openings. So, yes, you can supplement your income while you travel. Get out on the road and make your dreams come true.
